What We Believe

We believe that the Bible, consisting of the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments, is the revelation of God to mankind, is verbally and fully inspired by Him, is sufficient for the knowledge of God and His will that is necessary for the eternal welfare of mankind, is infallible and inerrant in its original manuscripts, and is the supreme and final authority for all christian faith and conduct. (II Tim.3:15-17; II Peter 1:21; I Cor.2:13; Deut.29:29; John 10:35).

We believe that there is but one God, whose essential nature is that of a living, personal spirit. He is infinitely perfect in all of his attributes. He is the creator and sustainer of all things, and He exists in three persons - Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  (I Cor.8:4; John 4:24; 5:26; Genesis 1:1; Col.1:1-17; Matt.28:19).

We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true man; that is, He is fully divine and also fully human. He preexisted eternally with the Father, was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He lived a perfect life and died a substitutionary death for the sins of mankind. We believe that He arose bodily from the grave, that He ascended to heaven, where He is presently High Priest and advocate for His people. We believe that He will return personally and bodily to the earth at the close of this age. He is the world's only Savior and is the Lord of all. (Phil.2:5-11; John 1:1; Matt.1:23-25; I Peter 2:22; I Cor.15:3, 20, I Tim.2:6; Heb.4:14-16; John 14:3; Acts 4:12).

We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine person, the third person of the Trinity. We believe that He was sent from the Father by the Son to convict the world, to regenerate and indwell those who trust in Christ, to baptize them into the Body of Christ, to seal them for the final day of redemption, to guide them into truth, to fill them for a life of holiness and victory, and to empower them for witness and service.

We believe that He gives spiritual gifts to believers for the proper functioning of the Body of Christ, which is the church. (Acts 5:3-4; John 3:5-8, 16:7-14; I Cor. 2:9-12, 3:16, 12:3-13, 12:28-31; Eph.1:13-14; Gal.5:16-25; Acts 1:8).

We believe that man was originally created by a definite act of God in His own image and is dependent upon, and accountable to His Creator. Through disobedience, the first man sinned and fell from his original state of moral perfection. As a consequence, he brought upon himself and upon the whole human race the penalty for sin, which is spiritual and physical death. Since Adam, every person is born with an inherently sinful nature and becomes a sinner in thought, word and deed. Every person, therefore, stands under the just condemnation of God and is unable to save himself or to present deeds worthy of merit before God. (Gen.1:26-27; Rom.2:6-16; Rom.5:12-21; 6:23; Matt.5:20-48; John 3:36).

We believe that a person is saved by God's grace alone, made possible through the shed blood of Christ, whereby He died a substitutionary death for mankind, and through the resurrection of Christ. Salvation becomes effective when a person, by an act of faith, acknowledges Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and Lord. The benefits of this salvation include the forgiveness of sins and a new standing before God, the impartation of new life, and all the privileges that accompany a new family relationship with God. The assurance of salvation as a present possession is the privilege of every believer in Christ. (Eph.2:8-9; I Cor.15:3; Acts 3:19, 16:31; Rom.3:28, 10:9; Acts 3:19; John 1:12, 3:16; 10:28; Phil.1:6).

We believe that God expects every believer to live a life of obedience, in which every area of his life is brought under the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the fruit of the Spirit becomes increasingly evident in his life. The goal of the christian life is to be conformed to the image of Christ. This life is characterized supremely by self-giving love for God and for others. The life and character of Christ, which grows through the Holy Spirit, is noticeably distinct from the life of the world. A believer who resists the gracious working of the Holy Spirit and fails to grow in obedience is chastened in infinite love by his Heavenly Father so he may learn obedience. (John 14:21; II Cor.3:18, 10:4-5; Gal.5:22-23; Matt.22:37-40; I John 2:15-17; Heb.12:5-14).

We believe that the Church of Jesus Christ is the universal company of God's redeemed people, His body, of which He is head, His bride, whom He loves infinitely, and His temple, in which He dwells. This universal Body of Christ is visibly expressed in local assemblies whose purpose it is to glorify God through worship, fellowship, instruction in God's Word, observing the ordinances and training in service to the world. The supreme task in the mission of the Church is to make disciples for Christ in all the nations through the proclamation and teaching of the Gospel. The Church is also to demonstrate the love and compassion of Christ, through word and deed, in an alienated world. (IPet.2:9-10; Eph.1:22-23, 5:25-27, 2:19-22; I Thess.2:14; Eph.3:6-10; Acts 2:42; Eph.4:11-13; Heb.10:25; Matt.26:26-29, 28:18-20; I John 4:17).

We believe in the imminent, premillennial return of Christ to take His people to be with Him and to judge and rule the earth in righteousness. We believe in the resurrection of the Body for both believers and unbelievers. We believe that the believer goes to be with Christ in conscious blessedness immediately after death, having escaped the condemnation of his sins through the death of Christ. He will, however, stand before God to receive rewards for works approved by God or to suffer loss for works disapproved.

The believer will live eternally in the immediate presence of God, while the unbeliever must face the Eternal and Holy judge, who will sentence him for his sins. He will experience the punishment of eternal separation in hell from the presence of God. (John 14:3; I Thess.4:16-17; Rev.11:15, 20:11-21:5; I Cor.15:20-23; Phil.1:23; Rom.2:11, 8:1; II Cor.5:10).

We believe in the personality and depraved character of satan, who is the great enemy of God and man. We believe that he, along with the company of demonic beings serving him, works out his evil plans through the ungodly world system, limited only by the Sovereign Rule of God. We believe that he was judged by Christ at the cross and will ultimately meet his doom in the lake of fire, where he will remain eternally. (Matt.4:3-11; Gen.3:1; John 8:44; Rev.12:9-10, 20:10; II Cor.4:4; I John 5:19; Job 1:6-12; I John 3:8).

"The Great Commission"; (Mark 16:15)
"Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation".

(John 3:16 NASB) "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life". John 3:16: Vs. 3:16 eternal life. A new quality of life, not an everlasting "this-life." Here begins another major theme of John: the dual one of redemption and judgment. It reappears at 5:22; 8:15; 9:39; 12:47. Here the emphasis is on the fact that men judge themselves. The acquitted are those who have believed in Him; the condemned are those who have rejected Him.

(1 John 4:10 NASB) "In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins". 1 John 4:10: Vs. 4:10 For the meaning of propitiation, see note on Heb. 2:17. Vs. 2:17 to make propitiation or expiation. Propitiation refers to God's wrath being satisfied by the death of Christ (Rom. 3:25; 1 John 2:2). Expiation emphasizes the removal of sin by the sacrifice that satisfied God. Sin interrupts normal relations with God; expiation removes sin and restores the relationship.

(Luke 19:10 NASB) "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost". Luke 19:10: Vs. 19:10 The purpose of our Lord's coming to earth.

(1 John 1:8 NASB) "If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us". 1 John 1:8: Vs. 1:8 have no sin. A reference to the indwelling principle of sin rather than to acts of sin.

(Rom 3:23 NASB) "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God". Rom 3:23: Vs. 3:23 all have sinned. Lit., all sinned, the same verb and form as in 5:12, which associates the entire human race with Adam's sin. fall short is in the present tense, indicating continuing action. Sin is defined in 1 John 3:4 as lawlessness and here as lack of conformity to the glory of God. These are complementary ideas, since the law of God is an expression of His character.

(Rom 3:10 NASB) "as it is written, THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE". Rom 3:10: Vs. 3:10-18 In these verses Paul quotes and paraphrases a number of OT passages--Pss. 5:9; 10:7; 14:1-3; 36:1; 140:3; Isa. 59:7-8. His indictment of the Jews has the authority of Scripture behind it.

(Heb 9:27 NASB) "And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment".

(Rom 14:12 NASB) "So then each one of us shall give account of himself to God".

(Rom 6:23 NASB) "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord". Rom 6:23: Vs. 6:23 the free gift of God. Sanctification of life does not earn eternal life; it is still God's gracious gift.

(John 3:17-19 NASB) "For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their deeds were evil".

(John 3:36 NASB) "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him". John 3:36: Vs. 3:36 has. Eternal life becomes a present possession as soon as one believes. Likewise, God's wrath remains on the unbeliever in the present.

(Eph 2:8-9 NASB) "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast". Eph 2:8: Vs. 2:8 Salvation is by grace . . . through faith. Faith involves knowledge of the gospel (Rom. 10:14), acknowledgment of the truth of its message, and personal reception of the Savior (John 1:12). Works cannot save (v. 9), but good works always accompany salvation (v. 10; James 2:17).

(Titus 3:5 NASB) "He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit". Titus 3:5: Vs. 3:5 not . . . but. Personal salvation is not achieved through good deeds but through the cleansing of the new birth. renewing by the Holy Spirit means either the initial act of conversion or, possibly, continual renewing by the Spirit throughout the life of the believer. In any case, salvation is God's gracious work, not a reward for man's worthwhile acts.

(Gal 2:16 NASB) "nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified". Gal 2:16: Vs. 2:16 justified. I.e., declared righteous in God's sight and vindicated of any charge of sin in connection with failure to keep God's law.

(Prov 14:12 NASB) "There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death". Prov 14:12: Vs. 14:12 A shortcut to success may be a false trail leading to destruction.

(Isa 53:6 NASB) "All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him".

(Isa 64:6 NASB) "For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away".

(Rom 5:8 NASB) "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us".

(Acts 4:12 NASB) "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved".

(John 3:6 NASB) "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit".

(John 3:3 NASB) "Jesus answered and said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God". John 3:3: Vs. 3:3 born again. Lit., born from above (as in 3:31; 19:11), though the word also means "born again" (Gal. 4:9). Both ideas (merged in John's gospel)are combined in the translation "be born anew." The new birth, or regeneration (Titus 3:5), is the act of God that gives eternal life to the one who believes in Christ. As a result, he becomes a member of God's family (1 Peter 1:23) with a new capacity and desire to please his heavenly Father (2 Cor. 5:17).

(Mat 10:32-33 NASB) "Everyone therefore who shall confess Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven". Mat 10:32: Vs. 10:32 To openly confess Christ in the face of extreme persecution would prove the reality of one's faith and result in His owning us before the Father. "But whoever shall deny Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven".

(Rev 20:12-15 NASB) "And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds". Rev 20:12: Vs. 20:12 before the throne, upon which Christ sits as Judge (see v. 11; John 5:22, 27). "And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds". Rev 20:13: Vs. 20:13 The wicked dead will receive some kind of resurrection body in which they will be tormented forever. "And death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire".

(Gal 5:19-21 NASB) "Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, Gal 5:19: Vs. 5:19 evident = plain or open, with overtones of being unashamed and blatant. idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, Gal 5:20: Vs. 5:20 sorcery. The use of drugs and magical potions (see also Rev. 9:21; 18:23; 21:8; 22:15). envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you just as I have forewarned you that those who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God". Gal 5:21: Vs. 5:21 those who practice. The tense indicates habitually practicing these sins, exhibiting a lifestyle that shows an unsaved condition.

(Rev 3:5 NASB) "He who overcomes shall thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father, and before His angels". Rev 3:5: Vs. 3:5 I will not erase his name. Not a threat but an assurance that saved peoples' names will always be in the book of life.

(Rom 10:9-13 NASB) "that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; Rom 10:9: Vs. 10:9 Jesus as Lord. Lord, or Yahweh, is the OT name for God; thus he who confesses that Jesus is Lord affirms His deity. for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. Rom 10:10: Vs. 10:10 These are simultaneous actions: one inward (heart) and the other outward (mouth). For the Scripture says, WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call upon Him; WHOEVER WILL CALL UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED".

(Mat 11:28-30 NASB) "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest". Mat 11:28: Vs. 11:28-30 This great invitation, extended to all, is threefold: (1) to come and receive salvation; (2) to learn in discipleship; and (3) to serve in yoke with the Lord. The yoke involves instruction under discipline. Yet, in contrast to the teaching of the scribes, Jesus' yoke is easy. Through the ages these verses have been among the most beloved in the NT. "Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and YOU SHALL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. For My yoke is easy, and My load is light."

(Isa 1:18 NASB) "Come now, and let us reason together, Says the LORD, Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool". Isa 1:18: Vs. 1:18 scarlet and crimson were both glaring and colorfast.

(1 John 1:9 NASB) "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness". 1 John 1:9: Vs. 1:9 confess means "to say the same thing about sin that God does." Forgiveness and fellowship within the family of God is restored when we confess.

(2 Cor 5:17 NASB) "Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come". 2 Cor 5:17: Vs. 5:17 a new creature. Lit., a new creation. old things passed away (aorist tense indicating the decisive change salvation brings); behold, new things have come (perfect tense indicating abiding results of the new life in Christ.) The grace of God not only justifies but also makes a new creation, which results in a changed style of life (v. 15).

(Rom 8:16-17 NASB) "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, Rom 8:16: Vs. 8:16 children. Not the same word as in verses 14 and 15 but one that means "born ones" (as in John 1:12). and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him"

(John 14:1-3 NASB) "Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me". (John 14:1): Vs. 14:1 In view of His departure from them, Christ gave the disciples (in this chapter) specific encouragements. These include the provision in the Father's house (v. 2), the promise to return (v. 3), the prospect of doing greater works (v. 12), the promise of answered prayer (v. 14), the coming of the Holy Spirit (v. 16), and the legacy of peace (v. 27). "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you". (John 14:2): Vs. 14:2 dwelling places. The same word is used elsewhere in the NT only in verse 23, where it is translated "abode"."And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also". John 14:3: Vs. 14:3 I will come again. See 1 Thess. 4:13-18. This is not the coming of the Spirit nor the believer's death, but Christ's personal return.

(John 14:6 NASB) Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me".

(John 14:27 NASB) "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful".

(John 1:12-13 NASB) "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name", (John 1:12): Vs. 1:12 even to those who believe in His name. An explanation of what it means to "receive" Him. "who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God". (John 1:13): Vs. 1:13 The new birth is supernatural and therefore completely distinct from natural birth. It is not of blood (lit., bloods), i.e., contains no human element; nor does it lie within the scope of human achievement (it is not of the will of the flesh or man).

(2 Pet 3:9 NASB) "The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance".

(1 Tim 2:5-6 NASB) "For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus", (1 Tim 2:5): Vs. 2:5 one mediator. All other mediators are ruled out in bringing God and man together; Jesus mediates through His death on the cross (Heb. 9:15; 12:24). "who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony borne at the proper time". 1 Tim 2:6: Vs. 2:6 ransom. Lit., a substitute payment. Christ's death in our place (the prepositional prefix on this word means "substitution," as also in Matt. 20:28) paid the ransom for all.

(Eph 1:7 NASB) "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace". Eph 1:7: Vs. 1:7 redemption. Three ideas are involved in the doctrine of redemption: (1) paying the ransom with the blood of Christ (1 Cor. 6:20; Rev. 5:9); (2) removal from the curse of the law (Gal. 3:13; 4:5); and (3) release from the bondage of sin into the freedom of grace (here and in 1 Peter 1:18). Redemption is always through His blood; i.e., through the death of Christ (Col. 1:14).

(John 8:12 NASB) Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life". John 8:12: Vs. 8:12 I am the Light of the world. Our Lord here draws an analogy between the sun as the physical light of the world and Himself as the spiritual light of the world (see 9:4-5; 11:9-10). This theme also permeates chap. 9.

(John 6:37 NASB) "All that the Father gives Me shall come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out". John 6:37: Vs. 6:37 This verse combines God's sovereignty, man's responsibility to come, and security for those who do.

(Isa 26:3 NASB) "The steadfast of mind Thou wilt keep in perfect peace, Because he trusts in Thee". Isa 26:3: Vs. 26:3 perfect peace. Lit., peace, peace; i.e., full, genuine well-being.

(2 Chr 7:14 NASB) "and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land". 2 Chr 7:14: Vs. 7:14 This well-known verse states God's requirements for blessing: humility, prayer, devotion, and repentance.

(Isa 55:7 NASB) "Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; And let him return to the LORD, And He will have compassion on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon".

(Jer 31:3) & (Deu 33:27 NASB) "The LORD appeared to him from afar, saying, 'I have loved you with an everlasting love;''and underneath are the everlasting arms;"

(Jer 33:3 NASB) "Call to Me, and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know".

(Jer 29:11 NIV) "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future".

(2 Cor 6:1-2 NASB) "... we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain -- for He says, "AT THE ACCEPTABLE TIME I LISTENED TO YOU, AND ON THE DAY OF SALVATION I HELPED YOU"; behold, now is "THE ACCEPTABLE TIME," behold, now is "THE DAY OF SALVATION".

(Rom 10:14 NIV) "How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?".
